The albino ferret featured in my profile is Frederich "Freddie" Heimlich Kunreuther. We saved him five years ago from two ignorant college girls who were trying to set him loose in the woods. He recently passed away after surviving a bad intestinal infection and a bad cold. We'll miss his happy joyful smile, his playfulness, his total acceptance and curiosity of every living creature and the world around him and his French kisses. Accepted by and played with the cats who miss him, too (except Lightning our old fat jealous tuxedo cat - bad ol puddy tat!)

WIndows API on Apple Macs may happen, yet..

Watch out, Steve Jobs may drop the bomb on Microsoft - the ability to run Windows programs on Macs - without Windows (at least Windows XP). Don't believe Redmond's numbers, Vista sales are far far far worse than expected and the projections are not good - with the announcement of dumping support for XP early next year, many vendors are considering to upgrading - to Linux. Apparently, Service Pack 3 ain't gonna happen, you either buy Vista Basic at the least or choke and die. How about Microsoft's customers/users give Redmond the finger and start switching to Ubuntu, Red Hat and the Lando Calrissian of Linux distros, Novell Suse. And for those who got the cash to get sucked into Apple's hardware snare, from a Mac Mini to MacBook Pro, you'll be able to run virtually anything you want - Mac OS X, another OS using Boot Camp or programs using XP APIs running flawlessly without Windows.

1.)By December 2007, many will agree this was the year that Microsoft and the Free Software and Open Source Movements both shot themselves in the foot needlessly warring within and without, while Apple and Google confidently achieved unquestionable dominance in their respective markets. There will be revealed a secret partnership or alliance between the two companies regarding bandwidth.
2.)By December 2009, turnover to Vista will be less than half of what Microsoft projected. Most users have either stuck with Windows XP, moved to Apple or bought a Linux box (as opposed to installing Linux themselves). Microsoft's threat to cutoff support for Windows XP sparks migration away from its products.
3.)Sony buys Be, Inc. intellectual property and employs Magnussoft Zeta OS in new Media devices, from laptops to digital media players, stressing security and ease of use for its consumers. Oddly enough, it takes off because Sony gambles on dropping use of DRM on music and video its download store and making media player seamless and easy to use.
4.)Steve Jobs gets Beatles exclusively on ITMS by negotiating 49% ownership of Northern Songs to Sir Paul McCartney and estate of John Lennon (songs composed by George Harrison transferred to his estate and Harrisongs Publishing, What Goes On split between Northern Songs and Startling Music). Other half still belongs to Sony Music/BMG, 1% belongs to Buena Vista Music Publishing.
5.)2011 - Google puts in a bid for AT&T, AT&T employs Microsoft as a white knight, putting in a hostile takeover of Google, Google employs a poison pill tactic of issuing preferred stock that can be redeemed at a premium after any takeover - the FTC steps in and orders a cooling off period for all parties, orders Microsoft to divide into no less than three separate corporations, allows "merger" of Google and AT&T under certain conditions.
6.)One of the newly created "Baby-Softs", an R&D company, purchases Bell Labs from Alcatel-Lucent.
7.)The real reason George W. Bush wants NASA to go back to the Moon: intel reveals Chinese plans to set up military bases on Moon. The President and the military want to covertly establish US military outposts on The Moon to counter Chinese lunar expansion.

Apple's new phone and media devices and a Google laptop in every home everywhere

Okay, the Apple "iPhone" will be rebranded not The Apple Phone because Cisco has been lapse and shoddy and sneaky with this trademark. There will be a deal. Not that it matters. In fact this first iteration of this device will be a noble failure like the Power Mac G4 Cube. It will be superseded by a new more versatile unbridled unhumbled device, an incredible device (a hint of what Disney characters will be enlisted to shill the device). It will be called the iLife Phone or iLife Device, but definitely, everyone will call it an iLife for short. The ad campaign writes itself, (iLife is your life). And gee, doesn't Apple own that brand name already? How convenient! This device will be labelled a media device, not a phone , not a music player, not a PDA because it will do everything for you communications and media wise. In less than three years after its introduction, say goodbye to the iPods except the Shuffles. The iLife will do it all - it will scare the shit out of Palm, Microsoft, Sony, Nokia and Motorola. Not to mention Dell and H-P as well. The iMac will become less and less a personal computer, as we know and use it, and really turn into an invisible media center/hub. Apple will still make computers that do creative heavy lifting, but the personal consumer Mac will finally be supplanted by a ubiquitous home electronic appliance that will work in concert with the iLife device. All those extra things added on to personal computers to make them attractive to use will be the domain of the media center. Personal computers will revert to being "computers" again.
While Apple will be eating a lot of peoples lunch, breakfast and dinner, a zillion OLPC devices will be finding their way into everyone's home as a cheap intuitive Internet device that goes anywhere. No matter if you live in the Third World or Main Street, USA, the OLPC will be the "other" ubiquitous computing device of the twenty first century. And Google will be the final piece of the puzzle that makes it happen, especially in the West. Once OLPCs start proliferating outside the Third World, Google will start distributing a Google brand OLPC that will be chock full of Google products that will generate loads of Google Ad Dollars and eat MSN and Yahoo's lunch. USD100 for a laptop? How about free? Google will make back the cost from Ad Dollars many times over. Google'll sell 'em first for about USD49.99, then cut back to USD39.99 , then USD19.99 , after that it's free as that AOL subscription disc you're using as a coaster or part of your kid's art project or if you are feeling generous and want assuage your guilt - hey, it works for public television - after you pick up your OLPC, you can log on, register the device and you can donate money to the cause to help illiterate kids in Africa. Then you can surf the net, click on the Google ads that appeal to you and everyone 's happy.
Will this bother Apple? Not in the slightest. It's not in the ad business, it's selling Porsches, Mercedes and Lamborghinis. Steve Jobs knows what business he is in and what he's selling and to who, which gives him that edge over Dell, H-P, Sony and Microsoft.

New Year's Prognostications (some forcasts longer in range than others)

1)Disney, through machinations of chief shareholder Steve Jobs, will acquire and streamline and re-purpose Sony. This will happen in more than a year, probably by Summer '08.

2)SonyMusic/BMG management and labor force will be purged from top to bottom. Fewer releases are on discs of any kind. Most back catalogue, remasters and re-releases will be available as digital download only - expect by Christmas '07)

3)SCO will finally implode but who cares?

4)Steve Ballmer and many others at Microsoft will be purged by new thoughtful purposeful focused yet ruthless regime - motto:subdivide and conquer.

5)The new AT&T and other telecoms will be attacked by clueless muttonheads in press for totally legal but ethical abuses of power regarding distribution of bandwidth - meanwhile Google is silently building it's own mirror of the Internet that runs on speeds that is like comparing the old pipes of current system to straws while Google's internet pipes are like twenty eight lane highways

6)OpenOffice, not Microsoft Office, will be seriously challeged by Google's online apps, which will include a simple but effective slideshow by end of Summer 07.

7)Ubuntu's Shuttleworth and Novell will each drop serious cash on Madison Avenue for campaigns promoting each brand's flavor of Linux desktop. Ironically, desktop OS'es will mean less and less as the network becomes the new OS.

8)More OLPCs turn up in developed world than in Third World - eventually sold for a profit at USD199.99 - becomes vehicle disrupting Microsoft's dominance of desktop in the Western world.

9)IBM and Red Hat sues Microsoft in a foot dragging trial that paralells the SCO vs IBM case.

10)Red Hat and Novell scoop up remains of SCO.

11.)There won't be a second generation Zune. This is not one of those items that Microsoft will get right in three tries.

12.)Sears Holding, not Apple Computers, comes out of nowhere to appear to rescue Blockbuster, only it's to snatch the real estate, dump management and employees and sell off the inventory at fire sale prices to Walmart.

13.)In the next three to five years, I can imagine a couple of hundred million OLPCs spread over the globe, a quarter to a half of that number will ironically be in Canada, the United States and Mexico and Europe, you can't beat the price and the performance. They'll sell like Commodore 64s and TRS-80 Color Computers, but have a longer shelf life and children will not be the primary users,though that childlike intuitive interface will undoubtedly, rest assured, be copied by Microsoft and Apple. China will be stamping out buckets of it's own OLPC versions. If internet connectivity truly becomes universally ubiquitous, this worldwide distribution of OLPC would be the single most revolutionary event of the first quarter of the twenty first century. After that, the next life shattering event we would have to prepare or pray for protection against would be an unscheduled EMP event, from either a series of overhead nuclear explosions or an asteroid or a extremely large meteor impact, or an unexpectantly large solar flare, now that we have a weakened ozone layer (human civilisation has only been on the electric grid for barely over a hundred years, now, it is not even remotely unlikely this type of EMP event will happen). The loss of data, communications and services from such an event will undoubtedly be universally traumatic, the great humbling, the universe rewards human hubris; afterwards, people may divide in two camps, those who continue to pursue communications and services via electronic and digital technologies, and those spooked enough by the first great EMP event to rely on earlier, slower but less ethereal technologies, those not adversely affected by electromagnetic impulses. How long that Amish approach could last is anybody's guess, for digital technology and its fruits are infectious and irresistable.

Microsoft Vista is going to take a long long long time to reach the companies desired number of 200 million plus sales in home and business, mainly because people will be very reluctant to make the necessary hardware upgrade($$$$) and their current satisfaction with latest iteration of Windows XP. More people will continue to migrate to either Apple via MacMini or probably it's upcoming media center or save expense of new hardware and try Linux distro, either Ubuntu or the friendly but now controversial Novell Suse Linux Enterprise Edition or its free Open Suse cousin. Vista will eventually make an impact but not as wide as Windows 95. The next Microsoft OS will be probably be the company's last hurrah as an OS provider. By that time, it may not matter anymore. The internet will be the new OS, even the browser as we know it may be kaput.
If a Linux distro can wiggle its way into iTunes (Novell?Linspire?), Microsoft might as well shitcan the Zune and start again. Maybe Shuttleworth would buy the Zunes and develop an open source community around this player for Ubuntu?
What will be a sleeper success will be the new Office. Hate to say it but this one is a potential keeper and came at the right time. The ribbons work. Only people that might have problem adopting are previous users of older Office packages trying to get their minds around the look. If only Microsoft stop acting proprietary about document formats and get with the ODF program. The old timers might give the new Office a miss and switch over to OpenOffice.org. at least until they overcome their bias against the new Office.
Not sure why anyone would yet switch to Google's online spreadsheet/write program, probably curious geeks, high schoolers, small business users. It is not very powerful, but simple enough for said newbies, Google fans, etcetera.

I was truly dumbfounded by this move by Novell, but things like this don't happen over lunch, obviously this has been orchestrated in the background by Microsoft's Linux guy Bill Hilf for some time now, sold the idea to Steve Ballmer, who now looks like a genius to the stockholders. The terms of the con as far as I can figure out, is practically the same as SCO's initial blackmail terms to the Linux world, except I don't see any money or licensing deal, just promises not to sue over "patent infringement", which is horse hockey and a promise of "interoperability" between Windows and Novel's brand of Linux.
Is Novell making a calculated bet that their company can make a serious dent Red Hat's business and eventually subvert Microsoft's business through this "Non-agression"pact? I've been a fan of SuSE, now SUSE for seven years, and I don't have a server, but something really stinks here. The sheeps and goats in this quagmire will be the GPL purists vs the any code that works pragmatists. And will Microsoft start WWWIII by dropping a patent lawsuit on Red Hat, Ubuntu, etc if they don't sign similar deal, like Novell? Maybe the decks do need to be cleared once and for all - otherwise the cold war will continue.

The Novell/MSFT non aggression pact smells very much like when Hitler and Stalin signed a very similiar deal nearly seventy years ago. Microsoft is free to sue Red Hat, Ubuntu, et alia and Novell will supposedly benefit by signing on their users. And then when those competitors are near vanquished, Microsoft will train its sights on Novell.

Something is up, something cooking in the lab and something over in marketing. I really would have liked to have had one of those machines. How palsy walsy do you ahve to be to an Apple engineer to get them to sneak out a copy of a prototype that'll never be released just so you can play with this? I suppose I would have videoed the machine in action and put it on YouTUbe for all the geeks to marvel at it and get a lotta' kul komments and flames. I do know one thing. I am never ever gonna run Vista on ANYTHING! XP is as far as I go with Microsoft. Either Suse Linux or OS X from now on.

And what security? Don't move from XP to Vista, go to SLED, security, ease of use, cheaper, excellent support, no steep learning curve and works on current PCs, no fancy hardware upgrades. Apple CAN put the final nail in Vista and scare the hell out of Microsoft

There are two ways Apple can bury Microsoft this spring (oh, just in time for Vista and Leopard releases).
1.)Lower the price on MacMinis even more for a limited time and farm out the manufacturing process to meet any potential demand. (forgeddaboudit)
2.)Drop the API bomb. Have all forthcoming Macs able to run XP applications.
Also: sell for a limited time Leopard OS for USD99 for Wintel boxes. Limited time deal for consumers: Purchase " Leopard-friendly" graphics and video cards for Wintels and get Leopard for Wintels at half price.
OEM deal with one Wintel mfg, either Lenovo, Dell or HP to sell Leopard pre-installed.

If this even eats at only twenty percent of Vista's percieved market share, this will either make Microsoft re-asses itself seriously, re-organize, trim off the fat and become a leaner , meaner business or start the long long long long long downward spiral like old AT&T.

Lenovo found sanity! A major OEM finally giving a real desktop Linux a break - on their laptops - sounds like the strategy I foresaw (and really really hoped) that Novell would take is being implemented. I previously prognosticated about Google and Yahoo pressuring or negotioating with OEMs about including their desktop search software in their boxes and laptops and that recently happened, too. I am not a mystic seer, it just makes sense to offer an alternative to Joe and Jane consumer besides Microsoft.
The gang in Redmond is making so many mistakes, it's no longer laughable. Challenging hackers to break Vista? Trying to put Symantec, et alia, outta business so users will look to only Microsoft for software security? Are they really kidding? Windows Live is awful to use, as is MSN Search, I'm just about ready to abandon Hotmail after eight years. So many people are going to abandon Microsoft because it is trying so hard to be a one stop entertainmaint, home, education and business productivity provider. Unless it changes it's culture and streamlines itself dramatically, it's going to the way of the old AT&T, a long slow painful death ( the new AT&T is SBC Communications, remember, they just bought the old parts and are starting to repeat the mistakes of the old AT&T, here we go again, except the end will come a helluva lot quicker)

How to get a leg up on Microsoft this Christmas

Novel has got a great OS with SLED 10 and its Open Suse companion. If ever there was a Linux OS that has a real decent shot at becoming THE desktop OS distro to dent Microsoft and Apple, this IS it. The best way to capture the minds(hare) and hearts of America and world:
1.) Fix the RPM/YaST. Now, dammit! That has to work flawlessly, invisibly, no crashes, no problems. at all.
2.)Arrange an OEM deal. H-P. Lenovo. Dell. Anybody and everyone. There has to be a pre-installed SLED box for people to buy and see work.
3.)Have an EXCELLENT support staff ready to handle all customer queries and problems concerning SLED. Don't outsource overseas - keep it local/regional, if at all possible. Hire enthusiastic people for the job and keep 'em fresh and not overworked or bored.
4.)Buy Apple-like advertising. Sell SLED like it is the coolest thing ever. Offer to go halfsies with OEM partner(s) promoting SLED/Open Suse boxes. Sell ads promoting out of box software/downloads/support but make it look easy, cool, stylish, attractive. Show Michael Robinson how it's done.
5.)Buy license for iTunes/QuickTime for SLED. Sure it'll drive RMS nuts, and make Berens wag his finger, but you're selling an experience - and Apple won't say no if it means a new revenue stream.

A.)OK, now Bill Gates officially walks away from Microsoft in two years even though Ozzie/Mundie begins Gates's duties almost immediately. When will Ballmer see the writing on the wall? Never, he will have to be taken out back and shot, and this is gonna be more pathetic than a loyal mutt being gassed at the local pound. Protecting his shareprice, Bill will most definitely be the one to tell Steve his ticket is no longer valid. The replacement will be an outsider, a hatchet wielding streamlining sonofabitch who will separate the wheat from the chaff and instill a real management culture in Redmond for the first time.
B.)Hopefully a new Board of Directors will appear. One of the decisions they will have to make eventually is to quit pussyfooting around and either split the company up or focus on SOMETHING, product-wise or service-wise, and do that SOMETHING really really well. Legally and ethically.
C.)Vista will most certainly be delayed, hopefully cancelled. A new OS has to be made from scratch, no more backwards compatibility. Kiss that NT code goodbye, like DOS (did you know DOS lies underneath XP? Instead of typing cmd in RUN, try typing command and see what happens...)
D.)OFFICE will continue to lose users such as students, average joe and jane consumers, governments and municipalities to OpenOffice suite and its own OfficeLive as well as Michael Robinson's latest online venture, ajaxlaunch.com until it offers affordable pricing and services on its across the board suite.
E.)WGA will be withdrawn and re-introduced
F.)Apple drops the bomb at Christmas '06 with MacMinis with XP APIs - no need to load up BootCamp, unless you have SLED as your second OS.

I wish I didn't delete my predictions from last year. I had predicted that Apple Computers would offer Disney a boatload of money for ABC-TV network but would be rebuffed. I didn't get it quite right but it's still amazing. Disney buys Pixar and Steve Jobs becomes chairman of Disney. How that is going to affect Apple Computer's iTunes contract with NBC programs like Law & Order franchises, The Office and SNL remains to be seen. Eventually, the production companies may make the deals outside of networks.
Howard Stern has decided not pursue his TV interview program on ABC for various reasons, one being the FCC, the others being all his committments to programming at Sirius, OnDEMAND and Spike TV. God I miss The Stranglers. For the third time in as many weeks I have been stricken with bad cold symptons. Today it's the costant dripping runny nose and nothing I do dries it up. Pills, hot liquids, powders - useless. I use a throat spray to keep myself from getting a sore throat, the drip down my throat from my nose aggravates my throat.
This had been a helluva three weeks health wise. Mysterious stomach virus, mysterious infection on my toe that won't go away, cold symptons that come and go one at a time, I want relief.

Why I'm annoyed:

1.)That an excellent band such as The Orchestra is now acting like weasels by promoting themselves as Electric Light Orchestra Part II (Former Members) instead of proudly promoting themselves as The Orchestra. This is not some argument based on semantics or principle ("well, we are former members of ELO Part II", "Gordon never was a member." "Oh... er... well we are!"); this nothing more than an exhibit of a failure of confidence in their ability to draw under their own name and downright short sighted greediness. Yes, a lot of people want to see The Orchestra perform in UK and a lot more people want to see ELO (with Jeff Lynne) perform in UK, but The Orchestra performing as ELO in the UK (excuse me, ELO Pt II, Former Members) is just borderline dishonest or over the line weaselnomics. I like the music, I can't stand the dishonesty promoting the music.
2.)Jeff Lynne's public reticence or caginess about performing or recording as ELO again or not. The name ELO is Jeff's and he is free to do with the name ELO as he pleases. Jeff has been busy working on innumerable projects and I am grateful for all the stuff so far. Heck, overjoyed would be an understatement. But after "The Disappointment" of 2001, there has not been any clue or word to what is happening with ELO. I do not mean re-issues or remasters. I mean newly recorded ELO albums with new never been released until now ELO songs. An ELO tour. At least an ELO rehearsal.
3.)After the surprise success of AOTW compilation in the UK, Europe and Australia and New Zealand, a forthcoming Jeff Lynne or ELO tour in those territories on the heels of that release would have looked like a sure fire success. No lasers, no space ships, just a sensible, simple, play the music and get off on the crowds, good feeling tour. For his own good reasons, that has not been Jeff's choice or desire at the moment. So I am not surprised that The Orchestra and their management (which has been chomping at the bit to tour the UK for six years) decided to take advantage of the current upsurge in the popularity of ELO 's music in the UK. But not as The Orchestra. As a sneaky ersatz ELO reunion tour. And so far not a peep from Jeff's management (or lawyers) concerning this turn of affairs.
4.)Kelly's vague hope that somehow Jeff Lynne will reconcile with him someday. This sounds very touching and all, but I'm growing suspect now of that this public display of wistfulness is any attempt at rapprochement but merely public relations. I'm sure if Kelly really wanted at least some kind of detente between himself and Jeff Lynne, he would distance himself from this band and not pursue any ersatz ELO type projects. (You have to hand it to Roy Wood, when he left the ELO in 1972, he didn't form a competing ELO type band, he created something that was totally unlike ELO. The relationship between him and Bev and Jeff was somewhat strained afterwards but they manged to patch things up and remain friendly in a relatively short time afters)

Wouldn't it be reasonable if Jeff licensed the name ELO and Electric Light Orchestra to this group of performers (who ARE very good musicians and entertainers and who want to perform his music very very much and don't disgrace the music at all), take his cut, and record and perform as a solo artist, in the manner of Brian Wilson's latter day career, performing his old ELO songs alongside any of his newer songs? I'm sure the audience/fans would support both artists.

All that being said and off the chest, I am grateful for all the music and entertainment from all parties concerned over the years. I just find it so annoying and sometimes disheartening about all the shenanigans that goes on concerning ELO. Good gracious, I know I'm going to fall off my chair and froth at the mouth, if one day Bev Bevan decides to hang up his drumsticks again and the remaining members of the current lineup hire a replacement and continue performing as Used To Be Bev Bevan's Move (UTB3M?), and then Bev hooks up with Denny Laine after forty years and starts the Diplomats all over again!

Prairie Wind is one of the better Neil Young albums to come along in a good while. It sounds real quiet for the most part, and kind of sad, like Roger Waters on Tuinal and sucking on helium and realising the hippie dream and the American dream were one and the same and realising it was all a Capraesque illusion harbored in a couple of billion minds and being compromised by Madison Avenue suits , reduced to a watered down bill of goods, paler, shallower, harder to grasp, harder to believe, like a cheap magic trick that we allow to fool us again and again, cos reality burns more than the illusion. The Reluctant AntiChrist, revisited

Today I start writing or should I say rewriting my "book". The original tale was about a reluctant Anti-Christ as he relates to the humble readers the true origins of the Universe, God, lesser gods, angels, Adam and Satan/Lucifer, and what happens when the Final Apocalypse is called off. It should have been published in 1999 but the company was bought out a by large private media conglomerate that sacked most of the editorial staff and killed my book deal. I thanked the new head publisher by strangling him with his tie and then hung him out his Manhattan office window by his feet. Oh, he didn't fall, someone pulled him in as I was leaving the building. I had beat it out of town and spent the weekend getting drunk in a hotel room in Jersey, watching the Dallas Stars win the Stanley Cup and charmed a couple of ex-Times Square burlesque entertainers I met in the hotel bar to spend some time in my room after hours. By that Tuesday, I was deep spiraling down the dungeon of depression in my two story walkup on Travis Street in Dallas, broke financially and emotionally. Six years later, I've decided to try again, work on this project and a few writing projects and see which one flies. I'm not interested in writing the Great American Novel, just wanna start collecting the Great American Paycheck.

Nature has attempted to reclaim New Orleans and various parts of the Gulf coast, taking out a significant portion of the indigenous human population. It's a disaster of epic proportions, to be sure, to be sure, but in time, these wounds will heal, leaving the jagged scars of memory upon the collective psyche.
For now, band aids of one kind or another are being rationed out to the full crazed survivors, who may never ever trust any government entity fully again. It's interesting to note that the higher ground around the French Quarter ensured it's safety and sure enough the first business to open after the hurrcane is a tavern, Johnny White's Sports Bar, and their first patrons, though few in number, were quick to drown their sorrows; they entered the establishment as the walking wounded but left falling down drunk!
I have made contributions in time, money, personal contact, etcetera, to help ease those who have suffered so far. I still feel helpless, overwhelmed by the sheer enormity, numbed by trying to comprehend the sheer scope of this disaster. I cannot help thinking how would I fare if such a disaster befell my community? I live in a flood plain with levees that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have repeatedly warned need to be totally redone before the next superstorm happens, taxes the limits, overwhelms and breaks through, flooding neighbourhoods, downtown, bridges, washing away the trappings of civilisation, leaving refuse, debris, corpses and little evidence of the vestiges of human dignity and the cycle repeats eslewhere ad infinitatum, ad nauseum.

just spent a few minutes eliminating all the spam in all the comments of my blogs then resetting my blogs to keep the spam out. i probably wouldn't hate spam that much if all the people who use it weren't scumbags, assholes, dirt clods, pondscum, rat bastards and right cunts. but there it is, so what can you do, hmmmmm?

mindless skepticism is mainly an excuse for ignorance. the average daily newspaper reader can't keep a consistent thought in his head for two minutes. at best they're armchair reactionaries. at worst they're hypocritical armchair reactionaries. When a recent survey asked if the government should have the right to limit the press in reporting a story, an appalling 68 percent said either "always," "sometimes," or "rarely." Only 29 percent said "never." Let's hope the First Amendment never comes up for a vote. By the way, even the people who denounce the New York Times as the bible of liberals ultimately get most of their useful news from it.

Whatever happened to true heroics, not people being celebrated as heroes who really aren't heroic at all - not talking about such pretenders like rock stars and media celebrities but policemen, firemen, schoolteachers - admittedly all incredibly tough thankless jobs - but they are JOBS, nonetheless, and being heroic is nowhere in any of their job descriptions. The idea of hero has been diluted so much, we invented the superhero, because the hero accolade has become so common. Now the term superhero is started to become a tad watered down.

Tolkein vs Lucas

Unlike the late J.R.R. Tolkein, a man who knew something about the power of myths, the mysterious allure of alien languages and the draw of ancient cultures, George Lucas is a filmmaker who thinks he's a storyteller but is actually the head of a corporate franchise. Tolkein wrote a story he felt was unfilmable. Mr Lucas created a film series that is getting more and more untellable. If Mr. Lucas was truly concerned about all these yawning abysses in the Star Wars universe, a lot of the story would have made some kind of sense. Instead, we have this cultural marketing force and touchstone of 20th Century kitsch that appeals to immediate unthinking gut reactions - Lucas is not making any kind of grand sweeping statement (I hope to gosh he isn't, for his sake, this stuff isn't The Power Of Myth, by gosh!) he's supposed to be telling what should have been one or two simple stories. As evidenced by the problems of Episodes I, II, Lucas is really failing at that convention, while desperately trying to grab our attention with gee whiz state of the art filmmaking techniques. The constant revisions to Ep. IV, V & VI (I won't say enhancements) rarely add anything that help those existing storylines along; in Episode VI, they come off as clunky and ludicrous. I'm not going to bother listing all my nitpicks on the whole series. It truly is nothing more than a crass calculated marketing venture, a once semi-mystical action filled fable with widely disparate and flawed storylines, embraced by two generations of filmgoers who grudgingly or happily line Mr Lucas's pockets while glorifying or reviling what is essentially badly executed comic book trash.Long ago I sold off my old enhanced VHS Star Wars boxed set and recently found the original Saturday morning serial innocent popcorn video of Star Wars at a video store for three bucks. No extra scenes or better effects added on. I watched the plain vanilla original and it still has that innocence and fun it originally conveyed when released twenty seven years ago. All that stuff is lost, lost, lost. The one redeeming feature is Mr. Lucas allowing the fan base to create their own fan films and stories (for no profit) to spread this culture amongst themselves. Like Star Trek universe, the fans may eventually fill in the the wide gaping holes themselves to their own innate satisfaction.Still, because of all the inconsistancies, it will never trancend the ages like Tolkien's work. It will eventually become part of the cultural detritus and dung heap of history.

250 million years ago, cosmic rays from a stellar explosion 6000 light years away bathed the earth stripping away the protective veneer of the ozone and killed ninety percent of life on the planet. this past december the earth was again bathed in a weak tea swath of gamma rays from an explosion that was 25,000 light years away, so we were lucky there. Next time we may not be so lucky.
